Automated firmware generation and continuous testing for the CMS HGCAL trigger primitive generator

Abstract The prototype version of the trigger primitive generator firmware for Phase-2 CMS endcap calorimeter upgrade is being implemented in order to assess FPGA resource requirements and dimension system. For development some these blocks, a data-driven design flow based on VHDL HLS C/C++ templates used automate production multiple variants. In addition, steps are integrated into Gitlab Continuous Integration tools automatically test validate every change, as much possible avoid repetitive manual tasks associated errors.

This paper presents an overall description of the CMS trigger system which is composed by the Level-1 Trigger and the High-Level Trigger subsystems. Details on the algorithms and selection criteria at a luminosity of 2x10 33 cm-2 s-1 are provided.
